Jordan exits AFC U23 Championship following defeat to Iraq
Jordan’s campaign at the AFC U23 Championship has come to an end, following a 1-0 defeat to Iraq in the closing match of group stage.
The National Team in third place with 2 points from a 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia in the opening game, and a 1-1 tie with Malaysia in the second match. Jordan were required to record a win in the closing match against Iraq, but the Iraqis were able to win the game.
Head coach Iian Brunskill thanked the players and staff for their efforts during the championship, and rued the individual mistakes which proved costly after lavishing a 2-0 lead against Saudi in the first game, and a 1-0 advantage over Malaysia in the second, losing 4 points that were in grasp.
Brunskill also reflected that captain and key player Baha Faisal’s suspension after the first game had its consequences on the team, had he played against Malaysia and Iraq, he would’ve probably helped the team score more goals and collect more points.
He concluded by saying that the team gave their all in the final game against Iraq, stressing that they will use this experience as a lesson, learning from their mistakes, to develop and improve in the future.
